SHIELD Act & Vulnerable Cybersecurity Solutions

Happy Monday! Recently, the SHIELD (Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security) Act was signed into law in the state of New York. The law will affect “all businesses who work within New York, as well as those who collect, process or control personal information of New York residents.” The breach notification law updates were effective on October 23, 2019, and the data security requirements go into effect on March 21, 2020.

In other news, Lenovo was recently called out for secretly paying cybersecurity influencers to promote their new corporate security solution, ThinkShield. Being a Chinese manufacturer, it is likely difficult for Lenovo to receive support from corporations in using their cybersecurity solution. Also, in a 2019 declassified report from the DoD, Lenovo is listed as a commercially available system with known vulnerabilities. It’s safe to assume that Lenovo’s cybersecurity solution will probably receive some backlash within the next few months.

Lastly, another case of ransomware has hit a school district in New Jersey this past weekend. The school district had to delay its opening this Monday morning, and it has been said that four other districts in the area were also hit with cyber attacks within the past few months. The school’s superintendent says that it could take weeks to resolve the issue and they are taking the necessary steps to gain access back. It is still unknown whether or not they will be paying the ransom.
